Inspired by my time working in Crane, Texas — a place I jokingly called “the middle of nowhere,” yet one that left a lasting mark on me. Every day I drove a long caliche road into what felt like pure emptiness, but one day that emptiness revealed something unforgettable.

Perched along an old fence line were several giant turkey vultures, quietly sharing the morning with me. Mesquite trees scattered across the land, mountains resting far in the distance, and those unlikely companions became the most vivid part of the landscape.

That moment reminded me that even in the most remote, quiet places, life shows up in unexpected forms. There is beauty in the stillness, presence in the emptiness, and meaning in the moments we almost overlook.

This painting brings that memory to life through rich, tactile detail. The fence features real wire, the birds are sculpted by hand, and the grass is built from unique textured layers that you can see and feel. Because of the dimensional surface, natural shadows shift throughout the day, changing the mood depending on the light — just like that West Texas landscape did in real life.
